Finn

She still isn’t speaking to me as we make camp for the night. Her jaw is still firm, and she’s staring at a tree up ahead. Yeah, she’s still pissed at me. Really, I can’t blame her. For the past forty-eight hours, I’ve been dragging her around on a treasure hunt. Not trying to get us rescued. Plus, I lied. Which makes me no better than the lousy ex she told me about last night.

I don’t blame her for being pissed. I knew it was a dick move from the start. I don’t know what I can do. Another apology wouldn’t hurt.

Sighing, I run a hand through my shaggy hair. “I’m sorry.”

Her jaw tightens. Okay. So clearly that’s not enough. “This doesn’t excuse anything, but I’d like to try and explain myself.”

Dropping to the ground across the fire from her, I wait to see if she’ll meet my gaze. When she doesn’t, I know I’ll have to push on and hope she listens.

“I’m one of the only non-tenured people in my college’s history department. No one takes me seriously. I get a lot of ‘kids these days’ even though I’m thirty and have a PhD. Do you know what that’s like?”

Her gaze flickers to mine for a moment. “I’d guess you do. It’s probably the same at your law firm. Well, finding this ship—hell, even finding the cave where the survivor lived—it would make them all shut up and listen to me. It would get me the grant money I need to keep researching. And maybe people would take me seriously.”

She snorts at that and sighs.

“Why didn’t you just tell me? I know what it’s like to work hard for something and be so close to getting it. you could have trusted me.”

“Would you have come along for the search?”

“We’ll never know. But,” she says as my shoulders droop, “I will now.”

“Seriously?”

“Two conditions.”

“Name them.”

“You don’t keep me in the dark from here on out.”

“Total transparency.”

“And I’d like to find my friends while we’re looking for this cave.”

“Deal.” I thrust out my hand, she takes mine. There’s still heat glowing from her. Only now it isn’t anger I’m getting from her. But if I’m going to make this up to her, I probably shouldn’t shove my tongue down her throat.

Though my dick likes the idea of that.

I’m still holding her hand in mine when I feel it. I look up at the sky as another drop and another drop of water fall from it. Well shit.

“We’d better find shelter.”

We hadn’t bothered making one since we’d been mobile. Now, I’m wishing we would’ve just stayed on the damn beach.

Jumping to my feet, I pull both bags over my shoulder and grab Avery’s hand. “Come on. Let’s find somewhere to go.”

We start running as the drops turn into a full-fledged downpour. We reach another familiar stone structure. This one has an overhang. It’s not much, but it will do until the rain stops.

As we reach it, I realize it’s not just an overhang, but more like a small cave.
